Meta announced that it has restricted access to several accounts, including those belonging to some Russian state-media organizations, in Ukraine.

Meta VP global affairs Nick Clegg tweeted that as per the request of the government of Ukraine, they have restricted access to several accounts in Ukraine, including those belonging to some Russian state media organizations.

The company is also reviewing other government requests to restrict Russian state-controlled media.

This measure has been taken by the tech giant in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Meta has also established a special operations center with experts from across the company, including native Russian and Ukrainian speakers, to monitor its platform and respond to misinformation issues in real time.

The teams comprising of native Russian and Ukrainian content reviewers help to review potentially violating content. The company is also using technology to help scale the work of its content review teams and to prioritize what content those teams should be spending their time on, so they can take down more violating content before it goes viral.

The company has also introduced new security features to keep people in Ukraine safe. These include giving users the tool to lock their Facebook profile in one step, temporarily removing the ability to view and search the friends lists of Facebook accounts in Ukraine, and rolling out notifications for screenshots and activating the disappearing messages feature on Messenger.

“View once media” has also been enabled on WhatsApp to allow users to send photos or videos that can vanish after being seen, as well as “disappearing mode” to automatically erase all new chats after 24 hours.

The company stated that Russian-state media have also been blocked from advertising and making money on its platform.

Meta said that they are taking extensive steps across their apps to help ensure the safety of the community and support the people who use their services — both in Ukraine and around the world.
