Google to bring Passwordless Authentication Support to Android and Chrome

0

Google announced today that they are planning to implement support for passwordless logins in Android and Chrome web browsers to allow users to sign in across various devices and websites irrespective of the platform.

The tech giant stated that this would simplify sign-ins across devices, websites, and applications no matter what the platform is – without the need for a single password.
Apple and Microsoft have also teamed up to extend the support to iOS, macOS, and Windows operating systems as well as Safari and Edge browsers.

The new Fast IDentity Online (FIDO) sign-in system does away with passwords entirely in favor of displaying a prompt asking a user to unlock the phone when signing into a website or an application.

This is done by storing a cryptographically secured FIDO credential called a passkey on the phone which is used to log in to the online account after unlocking the device.

Once this is done, the user does not require their phone again and they can sign-in by just unlocking the computer.

Even if the phone is lost, the passkeys will securely sync to the new phone from cloud backup, allowing the user to pick up right where their old device left off.

This method can be considered as an extension of its own Google prompts for logging into accounts secured with two-factor authentication.

The development came as GitHub announced that it will “require all users who contribute code on GitHub.com to enable one or more forms of two-factor authentication (2FA) by the end of 2023” to prevent account takeover attacks.
