HDFC Bank, one of the largest private sector banks in India, has allegedly fallen victim to a data breach. A user on a well-known underground hacker forum has posted 7.5GB of HDFC Bank data for download. There is no payment required to download the data, which indicates that the hacker has posted the data to give away for free.
After reports surfaced that personal information of nearly 6 lakh customers of HDFC Bank was allegedly leaked on the Dark Web, the private sector bank denied that there was any data breach.
HDFC Bank which was founded in 1894 is headquartered in Mumbai. The bank has a network of over 1,000 branches in India and overseas.
According to a bank spokesperson, there is no data leak at HDFC Bank and that their systems have not been breached or accessed in any unauthorized manner. He added that they treat customers’ data security with utmost seriousness and continue to monitor bank systems and the ecosystem to ensure the highest standards of data security and safety.
The hacker claims that the leaked data allegedly includes full names, email addresses, physical addresses, and sensitive financial data.
In order to support the data leak claim, the hacker has posted ‘Data Samples’, the screenshots come with first name, last name, application status data and more. He has also posted a list of month wise ZIP files ready for download.
The hacker wrote about HDFC Bank that it is India’s largest private sector bank by assets and world’s 10th largest bank by market capitalization as of April 2021. It is the third largest company by market capitalization of $127.16 billion on the Indian stock exchanges. It is also the fifteenth largest employer in India with nearly 150,000 employees.
