Chinese AI company DeepSeek has temporarily disabled new registrations for its DeepSeek-V3 chat platform following a large-scale cyberattack.
DeepSeek recently gained significant attention due to its advancements in artificial intelligence, offering exceptional performance, cost efficiency, and broad industry applications.
DeepSeek’s AI Assistant app has become one of the most downloaded apps on the Apple App Store in multiple countries. However, the company announced that, due to a malicious attack, it has limited new registrations to ensure service stability.
“Due to large-scale malicious attacks on DeepSeek’s services, we are temporarily limiting registrations to ensure continued service. Existing users can log in as usual. Thanks for your understanding and support,” the company stated on its status page.
While DeepSeek has not disclosed specifics about the attack or its origin, it is suspected to be a massive distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack. The company is currently investigating the issue.
Cybersecurity researchers from KELA have raised concerns over DeepSeek’s security, noting vulnerabilities that could be exploited. KELA’s AI Red Team was able to bypass the model’s safeguards, forcing it to generate harmful outputs, including ransomware code, fabricated content, and instructions for creating toxins and explosives.
Experts also warn that, as a Chinese AI platform, DeepSeek is subject to laws requiring data sharing with authorities. Additionally, the company reserves the right to use user interactions for service improvements without providing an opt-out option.
“KELA’s tests suggest that organizations should exercise caution before adopting DeepSeek, despite its accessibility and affordability. The model’s impressive capabilities do not ensure robust security, as vulnerabilities are evident in various scenarios,” the report concluded.
As AI adoption grows, businesses and individuals are urged to carefully evaluate the risks associated with public generative AI applications, particularly concerning privacy, security, and regulatory compliance.
