International Criminal Court reveals security breach

The International Criminal Court (ICC) confirmed the discovery of suspicious activity inside its IT network last week but did not elaborate on the cyber security incident.

The Netherlands-headquartered tribunal, which tries suspects of war crimes and crimes against humanity, posted a brief statement to X.

ICC stores highly sensitive information about war crimes and is one of the world`s most important public institutions.

On detecting anomalous activity affecting its information systems, ICC took immediate measures to respond to this cybersecurity incident and to mitigate its impact.

Additional response and security measures are now ongoing, with the assistance of the host country authorities. ICC said it would build on existing work to strengthen its cybersecurity posture, including “accelerating its use” of cloud-based technologies.

There is a long list of potential suspects who may benefit from finding out more about current ICC cases and potentially protected witnesses. According to Reuters, prosecutors are currently investigating 17 cases in Ukraine, Uganda, Venezuela, Afghanistan and the Philippines.

The ICC has a number of high-profile investigations and preliminary inquiries underway in nations around the world and has in the past been the target of espionage.

In March, ICC judges issued an arrest warrant against Russian President Vladimir Putin and Commissioner for Children’s Rights Maria Lvova-Belova for allegedly transporting kids from occupied areas of Ukraine to Russia, acts which are designated as war crimes.

While the ICC is a highly professional organization that pays a lot of attention to its cyber defense, this incident shows that really no organization is exempt from cyber-attacks.
