Fuel stations in Iran were hit by a cyber-attack which has paralyzed gas stations across the country.
Iran’s oil minister, Javad Owji, reportedly told state TV that 70% of the country’s petrol stations were impacted.
The impacted outlets were forced to disconnect their digital systems and supply customers manually.
Iranian citizens benefit from some of the lowest fuel prices in the world due to the government subsidies which can be redeemed by using a state-issued card.
A hacktivist group with suspected state links, “Gonjeshke Darande,” or Predatory Sparrow, claimed responsibility for the attack.
According to a Telegram post from the group, the attack came “in response to the aggression of the Islamic Republic and its proxies in the region.”
The group claimed to have gained access to the payment systems of the impacted gas stations, as well as each station’s central server and management system.
The disruption caused long lines of cars outside some stations in Tehran while others were completely shuttered.
The group that claimed responsibility for the attack is believed to be linked to the Israeli Military Intelligence Directorate.
According to the latest reports, the fuel pumps were back online Tuesday morning.
