Personal data of 81.5 crore (815 Million) Indians was leaked and put up for sale on the dark web. The data was claimed to be extracted from the database of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
In the leak which could possibly be the biggest data breach in India’s history, the information is believed to be from the data collected by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) during COVID-19 testing.
The leak has been brought to attention by a hacker known as ‘pwn0001’ who advertised the stolen information on the dark web. According to the data shared by the hacker, the stolen information includes Aadhaar and passport details, along with names, phone numbers and temporary and permanent addresses of millions of Indians.
As a proof, ‘pwn001’ posted spreadsheets with four large leak samples with fragments of Aadhaar data. Upon analysis, these were identified as valid Aadhaar card IDs.
As per media reports, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is currently investigating the breach.
