India’s largest integrated power company, Tata Power Company Limited, has confirmed it was hit by a cyberattack.
The Mumbai-based electric utility company, part of the Tata Group conglomerate, said that the attack has impacted some of its IT systems.
The company has taken steps to retrieve and restore the affected machines, and had placed security guardrails for customer-facing portals to prevent unauthorized access.
They did not disclose any further details about the nature of the attack, or when it took place.
In April, Recorded Future’s Insikt Group researchers uncovered a campaign conducted by a China-linked threat actor targeting Indian power grid organizations.
This cluster of malicious activities was tracked under the moniker Threat Activity Group 38 aka TAG-38.
The network intrusions are said to have been aimed at “at least seven Indian State Load Despatch Centres (SLDCs) responsible for carrying out real-time operations for grid control and electricity dispatch within these respective states.”
