Food distribution giant Sysco hit by cyberattack

The global food distribution company Sysco has confirmed that its network was breached earlier this year by attackers who stole sensitive information, including business, customer, and employee data.

Sysco Corporation is an American multinational corporation involved in marketing and distributing food products, small wares, kitchen equipment and tabletop items.

On March 5, 2023, Sysco became aware of a cybersecurity event perpetrated by a threat actor and the attack is believed to have begun on January 14, 2023. Soon after detection, the company initiated an investigation, with the assistance of cybersecurity and forensics professionals.

Based on the investigation it was determined that the threat actor extracted certain company data, including data relating to operation of the business, customers, employees and personal data

However, this data extraction has not impacted Sysco’s operational systems and related business functions, and its service to customers remained uninterrupted.

Sysco had notified federal law enforcement and the investigation is ongoing. In response to the incident, the security team at Sysco implemented additional safeguards to prevent a similar breach from occurring in the future.

With more than 71,000 employees, Sysco operates 333 distribution facilities worldwide and services around 700,000 customer locations, including restaurants, healthcare, and educational facilities.
