Ransomware attack hit the City of Oakland

A ransomware attack hit the City of Oakland this week, that forced it to take all systems offline until the network is secured and affected services are brought back online.

The City of Oakland disclosed the ransomware attack which began on Wednesday night. All the impacted systems were taken offline, while they work to secure the impacted infrastructure.

The Information Technology Department is coordinating with law enforcement and actively investigating the scope and severity of the issue. The city of Oakland confirmed that the core functions are intact and that 911, financial data, and fire and emergency resources are not impacted.

The ransomware group behind the attacks is unknown at present, and the City is yet to share any details regarding ransom demands or data theft from compromised systems.

According to the report published by the City, they are following industry best practices and developing a response plan to address the issue. They state that the public should expect delays from the City due to the incident.
