The Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, one of Israel’s top technology research universities was breached by a new anti-Israel threat actor named DarkBit.

The ransomware attack hit Technion, which is a leading center for cyber security education on Sunday. A new anti-Israel threat actor calling itself DarkBit has claimed responsibility for the ransomware attack.

The DarkBit group is demanding 80 Bitcoin or roughly US$ 1,745,200 for decryption, but according to the experts, the hacker group seems to be politically motivated and it is not sure whether they would provide the decryption key even if demands are met.

The ransom note was written using an English translator. Darkbit is threatening to raise the amount by 30% if Technion refuses to pay the demanded sum within 48 hours.

The institution is currently carrying out incident response activities to determine the scope and cause of the incident. The Israel National Cyber Directorate (INCD) said it is in touch with the Technion to get a full picture of the situation, to assist with the incident and to study its consequences.

While Technion’s cyber systems may be impacted, the university’s campus operations continue as normal.
